Electronic signatures are completely legal for most agreements such as the typical agreement from your debtor to honor a payment commitment. There are both federal and state electronic signature laws in existence making it legal and proper for parties to agree to certain types of contrast electronically (by email or other technology where pen and ink is not used).
You need to find out immediately if your debtor intends to honor the agreement you just negotiated, so tell him to accept the email you are sending in the next five minutes, and to send it back with his electronic signature which may be as simple as a statement that says, “I agree, John Smith” typed at the bottom.
